However, the 37-year-old has only ever been stopped a handful of times during his pro career and knew all the tricks of the trade to survive against his 30-year-old opponent, who in comparison was contesting just his 13th bout.

Davies’ busier style impressed the judge, who scored the six-round contest 60-56 in his favour.

The referee was certainly made to work hard as he had to step in early in the bout to warn McCauley about his spoiling tactics and then gave Davies a talking to in the third as the Blackpool man gave as good as he got.

“It was kind of what I was expecting,” said Davies. “The guy was a 160-odd fight veteran and he knew how survive out there.”

“I never at any particular point felt under any stress with him. He had his explosive moments, but I felt in control.”

“He was tricky and was tough to penetrate. He talked a lot and was twisting my arm. He was trying all the pro tricks on me.”

After improving his overall record to 12-1, Davies is hoping to top the bill in his next outing later this year, hopefully in Blackpool.

“I am hoping to top the bill in my home town in September against an opponent who hopefully has a much more progressive style,” Davies said.

“Believe it or not I think I will perform better against guys who have a better record than the one I fought on Saturday night.”

Kirkham heavyweight Bill Hodgson improved his professional record to eight wins and no defeats with a stoppage win over Tomas Mrazek.

The 34-year-old scored with some heavy body shots as he won all six rounds against the man from the Czech Republic.

“I was pleased,” said Hodgson. “It was my first six-rounder and was a good learning fight. It was good to get the rounds in. I’d had a really good camp coming into the fight so I knew my engine was good. So I’m really happy.”

“But I pay a lot of attention to detail with my figthters and I need to see where he is (in his career).”

“It’s not just a question of watching videos – I need to see him in the flesh.”

“He should beat Kevin McCauley, even though Kevin is a tough kid.”

“If Ryan does beat him, we will move on to a tough eight-rounder and then a title come September or later.”

The stakes are sky-high for Preston boxer Mick Hall when he contests an eliminator for the English middleweight title in front of his home fans at the Guild Hall

Manager Marsh is confident his man will overcome Matthew Mallin, of Barnsley, but warned: “Mick knows that it is is possibly his last chance.

“Mick knows he is better than this and if he turns up, he will beat Mallin.”

It will be Hall’s first fight since being stopped in the 11th round by Blackpool’s Jack Arnfield at the venue in January after he suffered a hideous-looking swelling above his eye.

Marsh, who promotes the fight, said of that experience: “It was a big prize – Arnfield was ranked highly in the world and it was an opportunity Mick had to take.”

“I would haved loved to give Mick an eight-rounder before that, but a fight on ITV in your own home town doesn’t come round every week for these fighters.”

“Though Mick did get beaten by a better man, he has improved for the experience.”

Hall concurred, saying: “I learned a lot from that fight and the injury was not as bad as it looked – I am going to take into the Mallin fight what I learned against Arnfield.

“Mallin is an experienced campaigner, but I have had the better level of opposition – I have fought lads with winning records all the way through my career.”

Included on the undercard is Kirkham heavyweight Bill Hodgson, who puts his unbeaten record on the line against Czech southpaw Tomas Mrazek.

Hodgson looked impressively ripped at the weigh-in at 225 pounds.

His manager Marsh said: “Bill is now an athletic heavyweight, instead of a slugger.”

“It is a step-up in opponent, a tricky southpaw and very experienced, but I expect Bill will be knocking on the door for titles in six months’ time.”

“Alan Levene has done a great job training him. We have given him a lot of learning fights because of his lack of experience.”

“We have not rushed Bill and he is now ready for a crack at something.”

Previously with Denis Hobson promotions, Davies’ joins Marsh’s growing list of highly rated fighters, amongst them fellow Fylde coast stars Bill Hodgson and Adam Little.

With the likeable 30 year-old joining his fellow Blackpool fighters on a Neil Marsh promotion at Preston’s Guild Hall on 17 June, Davies’ plans to keep busy ahead of what promises to be an intriguing next 12 months.

With a ledger showing 11 wins from 12 contests and ranked just outside the top 20 in Britain, Davies is delighted to be joining Marsh and, with minor titles on his radar this year, excited at the prospect of a successful, championship winning relationship.

He said: “I’m not only pleased but also really excited at joining Neil and having him look after the next stage of my career. I’ve fought the journeymen now, done all the learning fights that every boxer has to go through and now it’s time to be in more competitive fights as we look to learn and develop the skills needed to win titles.”

On his new working relationship, Davies also revealed that Marsh’s attitude to the sport and renown as a manager who looks after his fighters – plus a detailed plan of action, discussed with his father who is also his trainer – sealed the deal.

He said: “We’ve spoken a lot and Neil’s my type of person. He’s well known for looking after his fighters, carefully plotting their progress and ensuring they get the rewards their time, dedication and effort deserve. I like the way he works – you can’t argue with his success – and I’m really looking forward to working with him.

“We’ve a specific plan in place to get where I want to go. We discussed it in detail with my trainer, my Dad Mark, and it’s really exciting, it really is. We’re confident that, with Neil’s guidance, we can go for the likes of the English or Central Area this year, with my target – always my dream as a young fighter – being a shot at the British sometime next year.”

On his contest in Preston in particular, Davies also revealed that the calibre of his opponent is likely to provide both a great spectacle and a stern test. He said: “I’m 30 now and at the stage of my career were titles have to be on my radar. The Central Area and the English are titles that all fighters from the North West should aspire to as a test of not only how good they are but also as a sign of the rewards they’re in the sport for. They’re great titles to win and you don’t do that without fighting good opposition. We’re looking at getting a really good opponent so I can make a statement, make people talk about me as a potential champion and to support me in what should be a really good fight.”

Speaking on his latest signing, Marsh said: “With 11 wins from 12 its clear Ryan is a good fighter and I’m also delighted to have him. As he says, it’s an important time for him now and I’ll be looking to match him well, in fights that matter and which will propel him along the journey that we all want.”

“It’s a team effort and we will all be in it together. His next fight will be a test but it will also make a statement. He will be busy and titles will come his way. I can guarantee Ryan will get the title shot he wants and needs at this stage of his career.”
