On a night when the newly-crowned world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury was at ringside, Davies took every round as he out-pointed his opponent from Lydney, taking the verdict by a landslide 60-54.

At one point it looked as Davies was in for an early night as he completely out-punched his rival in the first session and left him with a badly-blooded nose that troubled him for the rest of the contest.

But Van Poetsch was nothing if not game and managed to stay the distance without every looking as though he would be taken out or stopped.

However, the verdict was a formality in a fight billed as super-middleweight.

Davies said afterwards: “It was exactly as I expected – I was the smaller guy on the night and I knew I had to use my feet a lot.”

“I caught him clean in the first round and I thought I would get him then, but full credit to the man, he was very, very tough.”

“There are no easy fights on this circuit and what I have learned from my first year as a pro is that a lot of these journeymen are built to last rounds.”

The former unlicensed boxer added: “I train hard for every fight, as though it was a title fight.”

“I have been told that was my last six-rounder, so I will probably step up to eight rounds, probably in February.”

“I know my manager Dennis Hobson has talked about me fighting for a title next year, maybe a Central Area, Masters or even an English title, something along those lines.”

“Coming from the unlicensed background that I have, I regard this as my apprenticeship now.”

“I am 29 in March, but I am a very young 28, and I didn’t put on a pair of boxing gloves until I was 22.”

“I have lacked experience, but I am trying to catch up.”

Davies now meets Lewis van Poetsch, of Lydney in Gloucestershire, who takes the place of Duane Green.

Green sustained a cut in his last fight against Nicki Smedley on November 28.

Of the switch of opponents, Davies said: “This doesn’t really change anything. I am still expecting a very hard fight and will have to perform.”

“He is a tough lad, who has mixed it at a high level and will be another tricky test. I just try to focus on what I do during my camps, in training and sparring, and ensuring I put in a performance on the night.”

“I had my last spar on Saturday with Adam Little and this week is just about ensuring I am ready for fight night.”

He will take on the durable Duane Green, of Norwich, at the Blackpool venue.

Davies said: “It promises to be another tough, tricky fight against a hard lad, and I know I will have to be on top of my game.”

“It is exciting and an honour to be fighting at such a historic venue in my home town.”

“Ticket sales are going well and I appreciate the support I receive from the Fylde Coast public.’

“Hopefully I can put on a bit of a show for them and get the right result.”

Davies continued: ”It will be good to fight in front of a large home crowd in a proper venue, which will probably be the largest crowd I will have fought in front of.”

“This will be a good experience that is all part of the learning curve in becoming a successful boxer and hopefully this wont be the last time I am fighting at the Winter Gardens.”

“My camp is going well and I have enjoyed a lot of very tough sparring rounds, including with Adam Little, which should stand me in good stead come fight night.’

“I am now starting to really feel the benefits of moving up in weight and adjusting my diet and nutrition – I feel stronger, fitter and I am punching harder than ever.”

Outside the ring, things look like taking off for Davies as well.

He explained: “I have also purchased my own gym in Blackpool with my dad, which provides us with a great facility for my training and also for me to work out of.”

“Investing in this facility illustrates my commitment to developing and improving as a fighter and shows how serious I am about achieving success n boxing.”

“This provides us with all our needs for training and well help to enhance my pre-fight preparation.”
